Centre for Teaching and Learning hosts teaching workshops

The Centre for Teaching and Learning hosted 3 teaching workshops –  two of which were in January 2021 and one in February 2021. The three workshops were New Faculty Orientation Workshop (NFOW), Teaching Workshop for Internal Doctoral Students, and Teaching Workshop for External Doctoral Students.

The New Faculty Orientation Workshop was conducted from January 11 to 13, 2021. The workshop was open exclusively to new faculty at IIM Bangalore.  The NFOW informed new faculty about IIMB programmes, digital initiatives, MOOCs, NSRCEL and life as an academic. Additionally, topics such as drivers of learning, course design, choice of pedagogy, evaluation methods, case teaching and writing were also covered.

The workshop was a resounding success with 17 participants.

The Teaching Workshop for Internal Doctoral Students was held from January 18 to 20, 2021. The workshop was open exclusively to IIM Bangalore’s PhD students in the final year (or concluding stages) of their doctoral programme.

The workshop was conducted by senior faculty members Professor Sourav Mukherji, Chairperson, Centre for Teaching and Learning and faculty in the Organizational Behavior & Human Resources Management area of IIMB, and Dr Arun Pereira, who are passionate about teaching and have rich experience in teaching participants from industry, government and the development sector, in India and abroad.

The workshop introduced participants to drivers of learning, teaching practicum, case teaching methods, case writing, course design and evaluation methods.

Altogether 13 participants attended the workshop. They found the workshop to be very useful.

According to participant Pranjal Chandrakar, Decision Sciences, IIM Bangalore: “The teaching workshop organized by the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), IIM Bangalore, helped me understand the nuances of teaching an MBA class. I learnt various techniques that enhance students’ learning by engaging them with the course content. I also acquired essential skills in writing case studies and designing a course. This workshop will help me immensely in my academic career.”

Participant Nandini Seth, Decision Sciences, IIM Bangalore says: “While there is massive emphasis on research in quantitative areas, the formal coursework, somewhere, falls short of imparting the right pedagogies required for B-school teaching. This often becomes a hurdle for the students as they enter the job market.

The three-day workshop was an information-dense introduction to applied teaching, including case-based teaching, interactive teaching and flipped classrooms. The workshop provided me with the opportunity to receive feedback on my teaching skills, case development skills and teaching plan from experts like Prof. Pereira and Prof. Mukherji, a rare and extremely valuable experience.

I am full of ideas and excitement and I can hardly wait to enter a classroom. I think all doctoral students should go through an intensive workshop like this to ensure they are on the right path towards becoming a great teacher.”
