Centre for Teaching and Learning at IIMB hosts panel on Mental Health & Wellbeing

The Centre for Teaching and Learning at IIM Bangalore hosted an online panel discussion on ‘Mental Health and Wellbeing’ on 17th January, as part of its Samiksha series of webinars.

The panel comprised Abhinav A. Bindra, the first Indian to win an individual Olympic Gold (Beijing, 2008), Dr. Urvakhsh M Mehta, Additional Professor of Psychiatry at the National Institute of Mental Health & Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore, and Dr. Rathna Isaac, a clinical psychologist, relationship expert, therapist and trainer.

The panel examined the possible ways to understand and identify the mental health related issues and the ways in which to deal or engage with them, especially in today’s pandemic-affected world.

Dr. Urvakhsh Mehta discussed the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of mental illnesses. “Understanding is extremely important to discover and disseminate early and effective treatments,” he said.

Dr. Rathna Issac talked about mental health in higher education institutes, attitude of people towards mental health and how individuals can understand own mental health and respond to it in an appropriate manner.

Abhinav Bindra talked about mental health in sportspersons. He highlighted the point that the pressure a sportsperson feels is very much like the pressure that students and professionals experience while chasing their dreams of achieving excellence in their respective fields. He talked about the ways to deal with such pressures especially in a high-performance environment.

The discussion was moderated by Dr. Vasanthi Srinivasan, Professor, Organizational Behaviour & Human Resources Management at IIM Bangalore.
