Prof. Gopal Naik
Professor Gopal Naik, Professor, Economics Area, is superannuating from the services of IIM Bangalore on 31st March 2023 after a service of 20 years at the Institute. Before joining IIMB, he was a Professor at IIM Ahmedabad.
Prof. Naik obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, IL, USA. His research areas include Public Policy/Public Service Delivery, Policies on Agriculture and Rural Development, Performance of Agricultural Markets, Asymmetric Information and Market Performance, Technology Adoption, Agribusiness Development, Food Safety, Agribusiness – Commodity Markets, ICT for Agriculture and Rural Development, Forecasting, etc. Prof Naik is widely published, and his contributions include books, many book chapters, and several research articles in national and international refereed journals.
Prof. Naik has been a consultant to international organizations such as the Ford Foundation, WHO, FAO, World Bank, NAFED, Central Autonomous bodies, and several leading private firms. He has served on several committees of the Government of India and State Governments, designed and coordinated programmes for civil service officers and state and international legislators.
Prof. Naik’s focus areas have been agriculture and rural development. Many of his works facilitated policymaking at the government level. He has been coordinating the Unnat Bharath Abhiyan initiative by Govt. of India, which is inspired by the vision of transformational change in rural development processes by leveraging knowledge institutions. Led by Prof. Naik, IIMB’s Centre for Public Policy (CPP) has developed a tele- education project (Satellite & Advanced Multimedia Interactive Education (SAMIE) which was reaching nearly 200,000 schoolchildren in 1000 schools in rural backward regions in Karnataka. This project won the prestigious World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) 2015 Award of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the United Nations in Geneva for innovative applications.
In 2022, Prof. Naik was appointed the Jal Jeevan Mission Chair in Utility Development & Water Economics.
Prof. Naik is a highly regarded teacher. He has won several prestigious awards, which include the Dr. D.K. Desai award for the best paper published in the Indian Journal of Agricultural Economics, the American Agricultural Economics Association Award for Professional Excellence, etc.
Prof. Naik’s contributions to institutional service have been outstanding. At IIMB, he held several senior administrative positions. Major ones include Dean Faculty, Chairperson – PGPPM, Chairperson – FPM, Chairperson – CPP’s Centre for Excellence for Urban Development, and Area Chair. Currently, he serves as Chair – IIMB Institutional Review Board (IRB), and Chief Vigilance Officer.
