Launch of the IIMB Archives
The Archives of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) were formally launched on 6th February 2026, in digital form.
The IIMB Archives initiative, mooted in June 2017, seeks to document and preserve the Institute’s rich institutional memory. Envisioned as a dynamic, multimedia repository, the Archives aim to house physical and digitized records, audio-visual materials, photographs, artefacts, and documents chronicling the founding and evolution of IIMB, including its iconic architecture. The Archives also plan to loop in the trajectories of the larger business ecosystem and the city of Bangalore, which have shaped IIMB’s unique journey.
IIMB was registered on 27 March 1972 under the Mysore Societies Registration Act, 1960, and formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi on 28 October 1973 at Ravindra Kalakshetra. Celebrating its Golden Jubilee in 2023, IIMB today stands among the leading management institutions in India, as also globally.
When IIMB was established in 1973, its unique vision was to take formal management to the under-managed sectors of the economy: energy & power, health, education, habitat & environment, transportation, and agriculture. Consistent with the dominant political and economic philosophies of those times, IIMB was initially set up to cater to the needs of public sector enterprises. IIMB’s journey has been unique, shadowing in many ways the developments in the larger business and societal ecosystem. The IIMB Archives aim to document the IIMB journey in terms of its evolving vision and policies, its programmes and centres, its curricula and research, the development of the campus, its faculty and staff, its students and alumni, and its administrative track.
A cornerstone of this effort is the Oral History Project, which captures the lived experiences of key contributors—particularly from the formative years—through carefully curated interviews supported by archival research. The Archives also contain the outputs of the Golden Jubilee celebrations which include publications, films, and commemorative works.
Of special interest to researchers, academicians, students, alumni, and the wider community, apart from documenting the IIMB journey, the Archives aim to illuminate the evolution of management thought, institutional development, business history, and Bangalore’s growth.
