This case traces the evolution of Sea6 Energy, a science-based venture founded in 2010 by biotechnology graduates from IIT Madras, as they built a sustainable business using tropical seaweed. The four-part case invites students to examine how the founding team navigated scientific uncertainty, resource constraints and emerging opportunities to transform a nascent biofuel idea into a diversified marine biotechnology platform.

Part A focuses on the founders’ early motivations and the initial exploration of microalgae-based biofuels, highlighting the constraints that shaped their choices.

Part B follows the discovery of tropical seaweed as an alternative feedstock, the incorporation of the company and the scientific validation of seaweed-to-fuel conversion, culminating in the realization that supply economics remained the core bottleneck.

Part C explores how the team acted on multiple fronts through product development, partnerships and early revenue creation, while also investing in cultivation as well as mechanization capabilities.

Part D examines Sea6’s transition from a start-up experimenting with possibilities to a firm building platform capabilities and partnerships across the emerging ocean bio-economy, while keeping its long-term biofuel ambition alive.
