Beckn Protocol: Orchestrating Our Digital Future

BhoiThe Beckn Protocol is an open, decentralized transaction protocol enabling Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) with interoperability across diverse sectors including health, commerce and mobility. The case study explores Beckn’s evolution, protocol architecture and ecosystem. It was developed by Foundation for Interoperability in Digital Economy (FIDE.org) in 2018. Beckn lead the transition of platform-centric ecosystems to protocol enabled open networks. Beckn was designed as domain-agnostic, modular, interoperable and stateless protocol which enables transactions through DOFP (Discovery-Ordering-Fulfilment-Post Fulfilment) interactions. The case elaborates how FIDE institutionalized the Beckn Protocol as a digital public good. It enabled diverse ecosystem participants – such as – start-ups, governments and private sector entities to co-develop open networks. Beckn’s potential was validated in its first use case of Kochi Open Mobility Network, and it evolved with use cases like ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce), UHI (Unified Health Interface) and ONEST (Open Network for Employment, Skilling and Transformation). Beckn has expanded to newer domains (agriculture and energy) and many national network pilots in US, Brazil and Nepal. Beckn’s protocol architecture and transactions enabled by DOFP interactions are the highlights of this case study. It explores how Beckn’s DOFP interactions within open network enable the value creation cycle with the DMTE (Discovery-Matching-Transaction-Evaluation) flywheel effect on platforms on that open network. Thus, Beckn has capabilities to create utility infrastructure for the digital transaction economy with decentralized control. The case study explores Beckn’s use cases across various domains and service offerings. While reviewing Beckn’s ecosystem strategy, performance tracking approach and impact aperture nodes, the case study suggests directional approach for accelerated diffusion and optimization of cost of coordination.
